🧠 Key Takeaways

  • Rippling graded 15 AI models across roughly 2,100 attempts each on live payroll and personnel data, and quality flattened at the top while price did not — seven models landed within a single point of one another at costs ranging from $621 to $4,359 per run. For AI-native SaaS companies where inference is the largest variable cost, model selection is a gross-margin decision, not an engineering one. Build your own pass/fail test set on your own data, re-run it every time a model ships, route by job (speed where a customer is waiting, price where nobody is), and spend engineering time on verification — the best model still failed one job in ten.

  • Owner's Adam Guild argues that logins are now a failure signal, not a health metric, a shift that will make DAU/WAU/MAU-led board decks look worse even as the product improves. His related point on defensibility: agents only pay off on top of an extremely opinionated product, because enforcing one system across the customer base is what generates the outcome data a foundation model cannot replicate. More than 83% of Owner's new customers now start inside its free AI product, up from zero two years ago.
